New research published on Child Abuse & Neglect including SEED lab member Jorge Cuartas shows that household multidimensional poverty, municipality homicide rates, and the presence of FARC guerrillas predict a higher likelihood of parental use of corporal punishment at home. Parents’ prior exposure to corporal punishment by their own parents also increases the likelihood that they rely on corporal punishment, suggesting an inter-generational transmission of this practice.
