New research in PLOS ONE shows global variation in social-emotional skills

A new study published in PLOS ONE and written by SEED Lab members Dana McCoy, Marcus Waldman, and Jorge Cuartas highlights similarities and differences in how children across 10 global sites develop social-emotional skills like sympathy, creativity, attention, and curiosity. Dr. Dana McCoy, the Director of the SEED Lab, was recently promoted to Associated Professor of Education and named as the Marie and Max Kargman Associate Professor of Human Development and Urban Education. Along with Dr. Matthew Kraft of Brown University, Dr. Dana McCoy was recently awarded the 2021 Society for Research in Educational Effectiveness (SREE) Early Career Award. The award is intended to recognize "early career scholars whose work has advanced rigorous research relevant to educational practice." Read more about the announcement here.
SEED Lab member Jorge Cuartas was named as a Knowledge Fellow at the Early Childhood Development Action Network (ECDAN), which had nearly 300 applications from over 60 countries. As a knowledge fellow, Jorge will continue his work on assessing the developmental consequences of corporal punishment on children’s development in low- and- middle-income countries and on developing strategies to eradicate violence against children worldwide.
SEED Lab Director Dana McCoy was recently announced as an incoming Research Fellow through the Jacobs Foundation. The Jacobs Fellowship Program supports early and mid-career researchers "whose work is dedicated to improving the development, learning, and living conditions of children and youth." Dr. McCoy will devote her fellowship to studying the impacts of technology-based early childhood development programs in low- and middle-income countries.
